Huff Cough Technique

Huff Cough Technique: Step-by-Step Guide

The huff cough technique is a controlled breathing method that helps clear mucus from the lungs, commonly used by people with conditions like COPD, cystic fibrosis, and chronic bronchitis. It is gentler than forceful coughing and reduces airway irritation.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sit Comfortably

    • Sit upright in a chair with both feet flat on the floor.

    • Relax your shoulders and neck.

  2. Inhale Deeply

    • Take a slow, deep breath through your nose, filling your lungs completely.

    • Hold your breath for 2–3 seconds to allow air to reach behind the mucus.

  3. Perform a Controlled Huff

    • Open your mouth slightly and forcefully exhale through your mouth as if fogging up a mirror.

    • Keep your throat open and avoid a harsh, explosive cough.

    • This helps move mucus up the airways without collapsing them.

  4. Repeat as Needed

    • Take a few normal breaths to prevent fatigue.

    • Perform 2–3 huff coughs per cycle.

    • Rest between cycles and stay hydrated to keep mucus loose.

  5. Follow with a Regular Cough (if needed)

    • If mucus reaches the upper airways, you may cough gently to clear it.

    • Spit out the mucus if necessary.

  6. Use a Breathing Technique (Optional)

    • Combine with pursed-lip breathing (breathing out through pursed lips) to control airflow.

When to Use the Huff Cough Technique

  • If you feel mucus buildup in your lungs.

  • As part of airway clearance therapy for chronic lung conditions.

  • Before or after using a bronchodilator medication.

This technique is effective, energy-efficient, and reduces airway strain compared to forceful coughing.
