Respirology Consult
A thorough evaluation by a specialized respirologist, dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of lung and respiratory conditions to optimize patient health and well-being.

What to Expect During a Respirology Patient Consultation
A respirology patient consultation is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a respirologist, a specialist in diagnosing and managing diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. A respirologist is required to have six additional training years post medical school in their speciality so they are an expert in diagnosing and managing pulmonary conditions. This consultation is designed to assess lung function, identify respiratory conditions, and develop a personalized treatment plan to improve breathing and overall health.
The Consultation Process:
-
Medical History Review:
-
Detailed discussion of symptoms, medical history, lifestyle factors, and any pre-existing conditions such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, or sleep-disordered breathing.
-
Review of prior treatments, medications, and family history of lung diseases.
-
-
Physical Examination:
-
A thorough respiratory examination, including lung sounds, oxygen levels, and overall pulmonary function assessment.
-
-
Diagnostic Testing (some or all may be needed):
-
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs): Assess lung capacity, airflow, and gas exchange efficiency.
-
Imaging Studies: Chest X-rays or CT scans to evaluate lung structure and detect abnormalities.
-
Blood Tests: Evaluate oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, inflammation markers, or potential infections.
-
Specialized Testing: Bronchoscopy, DLCO (diffusing capacity test), or allergy testing may be recommended based on symptoms.
-
-
Diagnosis & Treatment Planning:
-
Discussion of diagnostic findings and explanation of potential respiratory conditions.
-
Creation of an individualized treatment plan, which may include medications, inhalers, pulmonary rehabilitation, or lifestyle modifications.
-
If necessary, referrals for advanced care, including sleep studies, pulmonary rehabilitation, or enrolment in a clinical research trial at U-Breathe.
-
-
Ongoing Follow-Up & Management:
-
Regular monitoring to assess treatment effectiveness and adjust therapy as needed.
-
Education on disease management, inhaler techniques, and lifestyle changes to optimize lung health.
